DIY Discussions is a space for feminists to come together to share ideas and skills in a relaxed and friendly way.
The motivation behind the project is to attempt to empower each other to learn new things, with particular attention to skills which we may not have been encouraged to pursue growing up in a capitalist, patriarchal system. By learning to do things ourselves we become more self-sufficient and less dependent on this system of oppression and control. We also want to further our understanding and analysis of feminism through thoughtful, participatory discussion.
Our hope is to see DIY Discussions become a regular event where we combine learning a variety of different things and explore interesting topics together. At the end of each discussion we choose the next skill/discussion topic to focus on for next time.
We meet irregularly at the moment so keep an eye on our website for upcoming events which we publicise with as much advance warning as possible. DIY discussions usually takes place at someone’s house, so we ask that you email us (edinburghanarchafeminist[at]noflag.org.uk) for the address.
If there are any barriers to you being able to participate (for example if you need support with something like accessibility or child care or you can’t afford the bus fare to get to the venue) then please email us and we will find a way to help and make it possible for you to come along.
We start the evening by sharing a craft/ability/art/technique/idea/way of doing something (from 8.00 – 9.30) and then spend the second half of the evening discussing a topic from a feminist perspective (from 9.00 – 11.30).
On the 12th October we made stencils together and discussed the question “What do you think are the most important gender issues facing feminists today?” We also talked about safer spaces and what things people felt would make them feel able to participate in the discussion.
On the 9th of November we made things out of wool and talked about Pornography.
On the 23rd of November we carved spoons out of wood and talked about Patriarchy and the Welfare State.
On the 7th of December we made Christmassy crafts at ‘The People’s Cafe’ and talked about feminism in the Middle East with a special focus on the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan.
On the 28th of February we learnt about massage with the amazing Alex of massage corner fame and discussed Radical Consent.
On the 13th of March we were led in a singing workshop before continuing part 2 of our Radical Consent discussion.
On the 27th of June we learnt about DIY tattooing and had a discussion on ‘Survivor’s in Solidarity with Prison Abolition’
On the 16th of July we held a discussion at an action camp in South Lanarkshire which was set up to oppose open cast coal mining. The discussion was on the topic ‘Overcoming Machismo and Including Feminist Voices in Direct Action.’
